Tavares Calloway Escapes Death Row After 13 Years in Jail

Convicted Killer's Sentence Reduced to Life in Prison

After more than a decade behind bars, Tavares Calloway has finally received his sentencing.

In a surprising turn of events, Tavares Calloway, the man who was sentenced to death in 2010 for a heinous crime, has escaped death row. Calloway, who had been held in a cramped county jail cell in Doral for 13 years, was spared from execution by a jury.

On Thursday, April 4, 2024, during the resentencing of Calloway's death penalty case before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Leon Firtel, the jury recommended a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Calloway's defense attorneys, Carmen Vizcaino and Scott Saken, expressed relief after the verdict. Calloway's family and supporters have long maintained his innocence, and his attorneys had argued that Calloway deserves a second chance.

The jury's decision is a major victory for Calloway and his supporters. It is also a reminder of the importance of due process and the right to a fair trial, even for those who have been convicted of serious crimes.
